High School Students Deserve a Decorated Classroom TOO!

Let’s talk about something that doesn’t get said enough: High school students deserve decorated classrooms too!

Think about it. In elementary and middle school, kids are surrounded by colorful walls, cheerful posters, anchor charts that guide them, and cozy little nooks that make the classroom feel like a second home. Then—bam!—they get to high school and suddenly it’s beige cinderblock walls, flickering fluorescent lights, and maybe, if they’re lucky, a faded motivational poster half falling off the wall that says something like, “Stay off the grass.” That’s not just a downgrade—it’s a complete loss of identity and belonging in their learning environment. And frankly, it’s not fair.

High schoolers might be older, but they’re still kids. They still crave spaces that feel welcoming, engaging, and alive. In fact, creating positive, visually stimulating classrooms can actually spark learning and boost engagement. According to an EdWeek article I was interviewed for a few years back (check it out here), experts agree that learning environments matter at every age. Color, organization, and themes can set the tone for how students feel when they walk through the door—and whether they’re ready to learn.

In my own classroom, I’ve seen this magic firsthand. I’ve used my Amazon wishlist to build up my space over time, creating a room that feels exciting and different. My theme is disco vibes—not everyone’s cup of tea, I know—but guess what? It works. The colorful lights, shiny decor, and even a backdrop wall for special activities bring energy into our lessons, especially in history where I love to do classroom transformations. One week, my room might turn into a space for the Space Race; another week, it's a 1920s speakeasy. These changes aren’t just for fun (though they are fun!)—they help students connect more deeply with the content.

And let me tell you, one of my absolute favorite things is when students I’ve never even taught walk by my door and say, “OMG, look at that classroom!” or “I want her as my teacher!” or “I wish all my teachers decorated like that!” That tells me everything I need to know: our high schoolers notice and appreciate when we create spaces that feel special for them.

So if you’re a high school teacher wondering whether it’s worth the time or effort to decorate—it is. Our students deserve more than beige walls and tired posters. They deserve classrooms that inspire them, make them feel seen, and remind them that learning can and should be a vibrant experience, no matter their age.

Let’s give them that.

XOXO- Mrs. Richie
