The Teacher’s Guide to Pumping at School (From a Mom of 3 Who’s Been There!)
If you’ve ever been a breastfeeding working momma, you already know — it’s a full-time job on top of your full-time job. This year marks baby number three for me, and yep… I’ve taught and pumped through every single one of my babies. Each time has looked a little different, but this go-around? I finally feel like I’ve found my rhythm — and a pump that actually fits my teacher life.
My Pumping Schedule (Because Timing Is Everything)
Here’s what my day looks like right now — it’s a wild ride, but it works for us:
6:00 AM: Nurse baby before school and load everyone up in the car (coffee in hand, obviously).
9:30 AM (3rd Period): My first pump session. I always plan my professional period around that first missed feeding, and this time has worked out perfectly.
12:00 PM (Lunch): Pump number two! I grab my lunch, hang out in the lounge, and still get my pumping session in — total game changer.
3:00 PM (After Duty): My last pump of the school day before heading home.
Then I nurse again at 6:00 PM and 9:00 PM, and baby sleeps through the night 🙌
With my first two boys, it looked very different. I was stuck in my classroom attached to the wall like a prisoner — cords everywhere, door locked, missing all the little teacher moments that keep us sane. You know what I’m talking about… that five minutes to vent, laugh, or just breathe with your coworkers? Gone. It can get so isolating, and honestly, that part of it is harder than people realize.
This Time Is Different: The Momcozy Air 1 Changed the Game
This time around, I told myself things were going to be different. And they have been — all thanks to the Momcozy Air 1 Wearable Pump.
Y’all, I’m not exaggerating when I say I’m obsessed. This pump has completely changed my day. I can walk around, clean up my classroom, heat up my lunch, or make copies — all while pumping! Like, what?!
Here’s what makes it so good:
It’s ultra-slim and super lightweight, so I can actually wear it comfortably under my shirt.
It’s quiet and totally hands-free — no tubes, no cords, no stress.
The rechargeable case is my favorite part. It’s compact and keeps everything powered up so I’m not stuck hunting for an outlet between classes.
It’s easy to clean and simple to use, which is everything when you’re trying to juggle kids, grading, and your sanity.
I’ve used several pumps over the years, and this one finally lets me be me again — the teacher, the mom, the multitasker. I can actually move and still keep my routine going. It’s the freedom I didn’t realize I was missing.
Know Your Rights!
If you’re pumping at work — especially in a school — please know that you have the right to do so.
Federal law says your employer has to give you reasonable break time to express milk for up to one year after your baby’s birth, and you’re entitled to a private, non-bathroom space to pump.
The PUMP Act expanded these rights for most employees, and the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA) requires workplaces to make reasonable accommodations unless it causes major hardship.
Translation? You are legally protected, friend. Take your time. Take your space. You’re doing what’s best for your baby, and that matters.
You’ve Got This, Momma ❤️
To all my breastfeeding teacher mommas out there — I see you. The early mornings, the planning around pumping, the constant balancing act between lesson plans and feeding schedules — you’re doing so much.
I’ve breastfed both of my boys for a full year, and my goal is to do it again with baby number three. But this time, I feel like I can actually enjoy it because I’m not tied down or stressed out.
If you’re in the thick of it right now, just know — it’s possible. You can teach, pump, and still keep your sanity. You’re showing up for your students, your family, and yourself every single day. And that’s something to be proud of.
